Our understanding of the Christian Bible.
1:3-9 3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,
We have all we need for life and godliness in our knowledge of God.
We have all we need for life and godliness by faith in His promises; that is, believing in an obeying way what God has said He has done and will do for us.
We have all we need for life and godliness in this world where sinful desires tend to rule and master us.
We have all we need for life and godliness as we make every effort to grow, changeand be pleasing to God.
We have all we need for life and godliness because we will arrive safely at heaven’s home.

How it shapes the counselor (v.10-11)
10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.
Counselees are sufferers and strugglers.
Counselors are suffers and strugglers.
People in the Bible are sufferers and strugglers
Here is an unchanging point of contact for all three.
Why the counselor needs it (v.12-13)
In the Bible, the Christian counselor has an explanation for some of the great questions people struggle with:
12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
We understand deep seated desires to be pleasing to God.
We understand that people will be sinned against.
Biblical counseling has a clear explanation for why we suffer at the hands of others.
Biblical counseling calls people to a godly response to being sinned against
Biblical counseling sees suffering, even at the hands of evil people, as being under God’s sovereign control.
Biblical counseling connects that kind of suffering with Jesus’ suffering.
We understand how evil came to be, the horrific damage it has done, how God has limited it and controlled and finally how He has defeated it and will eventually eradicate it.
We understand how vulnerable we are to lies and to being deceived.
So we need the Word of God to give us God’s interpretation of the world, of our situations and of us. He has made it, He has given it meaning and He has communicated that meaning to us in His Word (Francis Schaffer)
What it requires of the counselor (v.14-15)
The Bible itself makes deep demands of the counselor. Note them here.
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Commitment to the truth of the Scripture
While there is disagreement among Christian counselors as to the value and use of truth in the world, there must be no disagreement about the truth in the Bible. The Scriptures are the unfailing, without error, authoritative source of God’s self-disclosure.
Carefulness over who we are learning the Scripture from 谨慎经文传授者
The Bible calls us and warns us to be careful of our teachers. Who is teaching us the Bible? This is not about their degrees, their certifications, their education – it is about their Christian character and conduct.
Dependence on the Scripture to do the work 靠圣经做神工
Do you believe that the Bible is able? This is not just ability to bring people to be saved. That is not what this says. It is able to make us wise in all that salvation means and brings through faith in Christ.
How it equips the counselor (v.16-17)
Why is this so? Because of the nature, supremacy, authority and sufficiency of the Scripture.
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
In its Source
It is the Scripture, the Bible, the Word of God that is the only inspired, inerrant, infallible revelation. I am going to say this as kindly as I know how: any counselor and any counseling that does not formally and functionally affirm this cannot be Christian.
It reveals the wrath of God and coming judgment
What about the revelation of God in creation? Consider ROMANS 1:18-23:
It renders all people without excuse
It is mediated through creation but does not reveal anything about the creation
It is suppressed and is substituted by people 神的启示被世人压制、取代
It is disobeyed and denied by people 世人悖逆、拒绝 神的启示
I am going to close with Psalm 19.
In its Utility
The Bible is generally and specifically useful for all Christian life and ministry.
In its Use
The Bible is useful in the full scope of dealing with people. These four categories seem to specifically deal with areas we associate now with counseling.
Teaching – the source, object and the means of instructing people
